From Walker to Weight Rack: A Journey Back to Strength
From Walt Beeson, PT, DPT, COMT (aka the Detective)
The Scene
A 64-year-old man came to Empower unable to walk independently after breaking both of his feet while on his fishing boat. He arrived with two walking boots and a walker, unsure of how physical therapy could possibly help.
He had a long history of osteoporosis, previous falls, a broken hip, medical conditions such as Crohn’s disease and a prior blood clot. Before these setbacks, he had been very active, but the injuries led to significant loss of strength, mobility, and confidence.
On the Case
During his evaluation, we found balance deficits, major strength loss in his legs and feet, and notable lumbar irritation that prevented him from bending to reach the floor.
Through education, manual therapy, and core strengthening, we began restoring his mobility. As his spine mechanics improved, we added a comprehensive strength and balance program to rebuild confidence and stability.
Little by little, he transitioned from a walker…
to walking boots…
to walking independently.
And once we got there, we didn’t stop. We progressed to full strength training, eventually performing squats and deadlifts close to his own bodyweight using a hex bar.
The Conclusion
Progress came steadily. Each week he was able to bend a little farther, move a little better, and trust his body a little more. Over the course of eight months, he went from barely mobile to lifting heavy weights safely and confidently, without injury.
