Ozempic (Wegovy/Semaglutide) vs. Mounjaro (Tirzepatide): What You Need to Know

The Scoop on Ozempic and Mounjaro?

Due to a flood of questions about the pros and cons of Ozempic and Mounjaro, I’m here to help you figure out from a physical health standpoint if this medicine might be a good choice for YOU.

What are these medications?

Ozempic is a drug that is approved for the treatment of diabetes. It Targets the GLP-1 receptors, helping to control blood glucose (sugar) levels and slowing gastric emptying, which promotes weight loss.

Mounjaro targets both GLP-1 and GIP receptors and is approved for weight loss and blood sugar control.

Who needs to take these medications?

Both Ozempic and Mounjaro are FDA approved for people with type 2 diabetes.  Off label Ozempic and Mounjaro are prescribed for those trying to lose weight and control cravings for not only food but also alcohol and other substances.

Physical Health Pros and Cons of Ozempic and Mounjaro: A nuanced topic

Ozempic: Although it promotes weight loss, it tends to spare lean muscle mass. Weight loss as small as five pounds has been shown to significantly decrease pain in arthritic joints, making it easier to engage in physical activity and therefore increase muscle mass. However, weight loss usually includes a combination of both fat and lean muscle.

Mounjaro: Tends to retain more lean body mass compared to Ozempic due to the combined effect of GLP-1 and GIP receptor activation. GIP receptor activation may have a role in muscle protein synthesis, potentially aiding in the maintenance of muscle mass.

If you lose more than 5-7% of your body weight, you WILL lose muscle mass, increasing the risk of: osteoporosis, fractures, decreased longevity, and immediate weight gain after disuse of medication.

  • EXERCISE PRESCRIPTION: When taking these medications, an exercise plan that focuses on building lean muscle mass is a MUST.
  • EXERCISE IS A SCIENCE: Building muscle requires lifting heavy weights precisely and safely with guidance from a physical therapist. Personal trainers do not have the expertise to help you prevent osteoporosis or lifespan risks involved with taking these medications.
  • NUTRITION PLAN: Proper supplementation with creatine and protein is essential for building lean muscle. We can advise on dosages and brands. Dietary changes to reduce constipation can help with abdominal discomfort and nausea.
