Dizziness and Vertigo: Causes, Symptoms, and Effective Treatments

By Joe Colclasure

Have you ever experienced dizziness? Dizziness can be frustrating and even scary, but you’re not alone. Almost everyone feels dizzy at some point in their life. One of the most common causes of dizziness is something called BPPV. BPPV stands for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, which is a condition that affects the inner ear. It happens when tiny crystals in your ear move out of place.

.

Symptoms of BPPV include:

  • Dizziness, especially when changing positions or moving
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Feeling lightheaded
  • Balance problems
  • Rapid, involuntary eye movements (nystagmus)

.

Only 2.5% of therapist in the US are board certified in dizziness. As a certified vestibular therapist, I can diagnose and treat BPPV. The treatment is simple and involves exercises called repositioning maneuvers. These exercises take about 15 minutes and use specific movements to get the crystals back where they belong. Once the crystals are back in place, we can work on balance and vision exercises to help your inner ear heal. Most patients see a complete cure after just 1-4 visits!

If you or someone you love is struggling with dizziness, we can help. Make an appointment today, and let’s get you back to feeling like yourself again!
